What We’re Reading: Matthew Owen

January 20, 2012

Tired of reading the same recommended books from the usual sources? Just think of our weekly What We’re Reading column as your non-committal book club with The FADER and some of your favorite bands. For this special, visual installment, our creative director, Matthew Owen, gives us his top picks.

Richard Prince: Collected Writings by Richard Prince: Richard Prince is a visual artist. The re-photographer! This book gives a glimpse into his mind, collecting his ramblings and some techniques, but the iridescent purple cloth cover is really what did it for me.

Relic and Fetish by Paolo Chiasera: This book is a good example of a successful artist/designer collaboration.

Vier 5's Best Company and Fairy Tale magazine: Vier 5 did a great job documenting Best Company, the 1980 country club brand designed by Italian designer Olmes Carretti. Vier 5 are also the creators of Fairy Tale magazine (see above).

The Travel Almanac: A very well thought out magazine playing with contemporary ideas of temporary habitation from multiple perspectives. The size is really good for travel as well.

Having Been Said: Writings and Interviews of Lawrence Weiner, 1968-2003 edited by Gerti Fietzek and Gregor Stemmrich: Read and learn.

Rod Bianco: An exhibition catalogue from artist Bjarne Melgaard & De Appel Arts Centre. Extremely memorable images throughout a thick, hardbound book. Free exhibition poster with purchase!
