2012 is already such a strong year for music and Julia Holter’s new album Ekstasis is sure to be one of the year’s most innovative. Braiding together pop, folk and contemporary classical music, the album is always compelling as it subtly shifts in tone. Holter has a gentle, pleasing voice and a loping way around an organ. Those two things prove the core for Ekstasis‘ experimentation. Though Holter often hits odder notes, she’s never marred by the avant-garde, using just a light touch of weird to keep things new. It’s a beautiful record, take a listen at NPR.
