Stream: Madalyn Merkey, “Siren”

The definition of "bedroom musician" has varied wildly over the years. Going from dudes with acoustic guitars making lovelorn songs while sitting on the edge of their beds, to...this. Chicago's Madalyn Merkey spends a lot of time messing with vocoders, using them to manipulate her voice into something completely unrecognizable. It only sort of feels like music, but at the same time, there's an organic warmth to it that makes it endlessly appealing. This is normally where we'd call it comforting, but it's too weird to be comforting. Actually, this is mostly just bizarre! It flips the idea that noise music needs to be harsh to be weird and goes for something much more welcoming. Madalyn Merkey's Scent is out on Matt Mondanile's (of Ducktails and Real Estate fame) New Images Ltd. label.
