Stream: Ab-Soul f. Kendrick Lamar, “Illuminate”

May 08, 2012

Kendrick Lamar joins Ab-Soul on "Illuminate," a Skhye Hutch-produced track from what's looking like a pretty incredible and very weird album (as well as the closest fans will get to a Black Hippy full-length anytime soon), called Control System, which is out this Friday. Lamar pushes against his golden-boy status while affirming it, rapidly ping-ponging syllables on his verse: The truth is they wanna know how close me, Dre and Snoop is/ So how the shoe fits, when they chose this/ To be 2Pac, but the truth is/ I don't give two shits. The mystical/dorky Control System cover art, above, places a Jesus fish into the center of the ten-pronged structure of the Sephirot, a diagram from Kabbalah that illustrates ten intangible powers that bind the universe together.
