“Life/Trap” is one of two previously unreleased songs bundled into Elite Gymnastics’ Ruin 4 package (XL shirt, reversible poster, remixes), once accessible only by calling up EG’s info line (1-800-940-5788). Its lyrics hover just below a whirlpool of programmed drums and occasional wisps of mic feedback, obscured, but not outshined, by the production. You think your life’s a circle but it’s a decline comes through clear and devastating, but this is a love song nonetheless, the repeated moral that we share these tough times with each other, after all: Every day I’m in a trap and/ Every day you’re in the trap with me. For a little while in the middle, the drums cool down and there’s just panting and the sound of an IV drip. When the song returns to full-frenzy 30 seconds later, it’s like the end of Britney Spears’ “Everytime” video, where she wakes up and realizes she’s still alive and smiles.
