Video: King Louie, “Bars”

King L, the Chicago rapper fka King Louie who was recently rechristened due to a copyright issue with Disney, released his Motion Picture mixtape back in March. "Bars" was an immediate standout, despite its lyrical focus and lack of a chorus or obvious hook. Louie has been known to drop brief tracks that operate mostly as rapping exercises. "Bars" captures that spirit, finding Louie in a zoned-in lyrical mode. Thanks to C-Sick's beat, which ratchets up the tension as the track progresses, and Louie's uniquely bemused rap style, it works as a full-baked song, too, and eschews conventional wisdom about what a rap single should be.
