Video: The Teenagers, “Secret Crush”

June 20, 2012

The Teenagers, the French band behind "Homecoming" and other endearingly distasteful songs about secret crushes, have resurfaced with a new demo. With an outdated Windows Movie Maker video and a sound in line with their 2007-08 oeuvre, "Secret Crush" is probably just a long-lost MP3 from the band's heyday. But imagine if it was made last week. Imagine the band's reunion after years apart, with earnest hugs and a collective recounting of a mutually enduring infatuation, their pent-up angst coming to a head later that night as they compile a nonconsensual slideshow of photos ripped from the Photobucket account of one pretty Teenagers fan, the video you see above. Huddled together over a MacBook, their past five years fold into nothingness, and The Teenagers again feel themselves leaving the stage of some suburban Paris dive bar, brushing one-by-one past an exchange student with sunken eyes. What does time mean when you feel that brush still? It doesn't make a difference whether "Secret Crush" was recorded then or now, because it's chorus is creepy and real either way: I want to fuck you/ but I'm shy.
