Interview: Freddie Gibbs

July 10, 2012

Freddie Gibbs has moved from his hometown of Gary, Indiana to sunny Los Angeles, but the bright weather hasn't altogether soothed him. A lot of gangsta rap these days is watered down, he says, and Chicago's young stars should thank him for opening up opportunities for Midwestern rappers. If that sounds controversial, Gibbs concedes, it's just his opinion. Six years after entering the public eye, Gibbs, now affiliated with Young Jeezy's CTE crew, is still agitated, exacting and prolific. He offers two new releases this summer, a collaborative EP with Madlib called Shame (out now) and his first mixtape with DJ Drama, Baby Face Killa, expected any day now.
