Though its been seven years since Steve “ESPO” Powers had a gallery show in New York City, his hometown, you can easily see his work there every day. Specifically, you can see it in Downtown Brooklyn, across the street from his studio, painted on the side of a parking garage. On the other side of the street, he and a skilled team of sign painters have been grinding away on something a little less public, his show, “A Word is Worth a Thousand Pictures,” opening a week from today at the Joshua Liner Gallery, and running through September 29th. Powers took us on a tour of his enormous studio and explained, from scratch, how he makes what he makes. He also told a lot of jokes.
