If you’re looking for a touchstone for Chicago rapper Tree, who is a part of Project Mayhem, then Memphis’ 8Ball is probably your best comparison. They couldn’t be more different geographically, but they both have a world-weary husk of a voice, as happy to rap about girls as they are talking about punching you in the face or how they had a really bad day. In this video, Tree raps while laying on the roof of a moving car, smoking, his voice just barely a croak. It’s a compelling visual moment, but it sounds great, too. The rest of the group for their part, is in fine form. They have actual chemistry! It’s an increasingly rare thing.
