Though I’ve always known Anthony Naples to be a fluid producer, able to move from rough electronics to classic house, I wasn’t expecting “Pueblo,” which is built from choppy drums and a perfect, brief piano loop. It sounds like something that RZA would have made had he spent a lot more time lurking dance clubs than he maybe did. As a whole, El Portal feels like Naples’ most experimental work yet, but that doesn’t mean it hits the outer stratosphere—instead, it’s a tasteful, beautifully done move forward. El Portal is out next month on The Trilogy Tapes.
