M.C. Taylor, the man behind Hiss Golden Messenger, has a deep love for soulful country. "Red Rose Nantahala" feels like it wouldn't be out of place somewhere in the first half of The Band's catalog, but it doesn't feel needlessly or falsely retro. Instead, Taylor uses a tried-and-true melancholy lope as a backdrop for a timeless song about self-assurance and limitations. Haw is out April 2nd on Paradise of Bachelors.
