Survival, "Tragedy of the Mind"

"Tragedy of the Mind," a fresh track from Hunter Hunt-Hendrix's long-running post-rock project Survival (formerly known as Birthday Boyz), rides into space on a single, four-note guitar motif, repeated so many times over that its cantering gait kind of collapses into itself. It doesn't pack the same soul-shredding, guttural punch as the Liturgy frontman's main gig, but it's a similar example of minimalism harnessed toward a maximalist end—right down to the group-sung refrain, ending begins. Look for Survival's self-titled debut on Thrill Jockey May 14th.
