Stream: Chlöe Howl, "Rumour (Unicorn Kid Remix)"

Lately I've been wondering if—with his long-rumored album so far just a dream, and no new non-remix tracks since last October's "Feel So Real," and the recent cancellation of his only show this year—Unicorn Kid isn't up to something. Since 2011, the Scottish producer's sound has been a chiptune-y take on ’90s happy hardcore. It's very precise, but dangerously positions him sort of like a character actor: a blessing for easy branding and a curse as work becomes routine. In that context, Unicorn Kid's remix of the title track of 18-year-old British singer Chlöe Howl's free Rumour EP is especially interesting. The song's subtle stylistic twist—similar vibe but no huge synth lead, no 8bit—seems to suggest something new on the horizon. It's not here yet, but it'll be exciting to watch that sun rise.
