Every week a different FADER staff member will pick a clothing item or accessory that he or she has lately been spending a lot of time with—or would like to—and write a little love letter to it. We would’ve done a column on who we’re dating but that seemed a little bit much. This week Maia talks about the Nikolai Rose signet ring.

I never really lose things. The unknown can be difficult for a well-ordered brain, and I try to keep all my important knick-knacks in a neat place in my room. So when I misplaced a very special, simple silver ring a few months back, I have no idea how it happened. I just looked down at my finger and poof, it was gone. I got a great compliment on that ring before, from a lady I served with on jury duty. I mourned the loss of that ring for a long time and then, with no other choice, moved on with my life.

I wasn't necessarily looking to fill the ring void on my left pointer finger, but when I saw this Nikolai Rose signet for sale at Grand Street Bakery, it felt like a perfect replacement. A signet ring is typically engraved with some kind of insignia, but I love that this one is just plain. The spot where something would be engraved is filled with lots of tiny dots, like a baby tennis racket. And although it comes from a different place with a different story, it's simplicity is almost like a blank slate, all the better to collect more compliments, right?
