There is something aimless and dérive-like about Julia Holter’s vocals on new single “World,” as though she were making up the melody and words as she went along. But the little accents she dabs on along the way—usually backup vox, but also low-register strings and even the occasional harpsichord trill—feel beautifully and shockingly deliberate, underscoring its free-associative turns like pit musicians in a courtly opera. These Rick Bahto-directed visuals set the thematic tone for the Gen F artist‘s upcoming Loud City Song LP, out August 20th via Domino.
