Ciara, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Vampire Weekend, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and Miley Cyrus Nominated for MTV VMAs

MTV has announced the nominees for this year's Video Music Awards, taking place on August 25th at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. Current FADER cover star Ciara was nominated for Best Choreography. Other recent FADER cover stars nominated include Vampire Weekend (Best Rock Video), Kendrick Lamar (Best Hip Hop Video, Best Male Video), Miguel (Best Video with a Social Message) and Drake (Best Hip Hop Video, Best Direction). Justin Timberlake and Macklemore lead the pack with six nominations apiece—they'll compete for Video of the Year, a category where the only female nominee is Taylor Swift. Swift is also up for Best Female Video, along with Rihanna and Miley Cyrus, who was nominated for three awards.

Mashable reported yesterday that MTV would "reveal" VMA nominees on its Instagram and Vine accounts via short stop-motion videos created by 23-year-old animator Khoa Phan. Phan's videos will pop up on MTV's accounts once an hour today, but they won't exactly reveal anything—see the full list of VMA nominees at MTV's site.
