Stream: His Clancyness, “Progress”

October 03, 2013

FADER PREMIERE

A kind of lesser-known, across-the-pond contemporary of bands like Real Estate and The Smith Westerns, Ottawa-born, Bologna-based songwriter Jonathan Clancy has been churning out warmhearted jangle-pop tunes under the solo(ish) moniker His Clancyness for quite a few years now, most notably with his 2010 Always Mist cassette, which has an iconic cover of a woman's face that I think will always make me a little nostalgic for the heyday of the MP3 blog. Now, he's back with a new LP, Viscious, and with it, what feels like a clear-eyed refinement on the textured, bedroom-recorded sound he was honing in the earlier part of the decade. If "Progress" is any indication, his knack for turning a pretty melody remains very much intact, even if the extended instrumental jam at the end shows he's still just as interested in breaking down his own structures as he is in fortifying them. Vicious is out October 8th via FatCat. Tourdates below.
