Video: Mel of The Outfit, TX, "Free Yourself"

Mel nurses cognac in a space helmet in the second video from Houston-based group The Outfit, TX's double mixtape, Cognac/Four Corner Room (really two conjoined solo albums from Mel and fellow founding member Dorian). In his typical restrained but intricate screw-meets-funk delivery, Mel gives heartfelt encouragement to his hard-working girl: It's who you are, not what you do, that defines you. I've been straining to figure out the symbolic significance of a space helmet in a song that's otherwise about finding empowerment through the mundanities of real life, but it's almost better left as an enigma.
