Back in 2011, Dr. Dre told FADER at the Beats By Dre store opening that "we're trying to be second to Apple, I don't think that's a bad position." And it sounds like someone in Cupertino was listening-- and maybe even starting to sweat. According to a new report from the Financial Times (and since corroborated by Reuters, WSJ, and more), Apple is closing in on a deal to buy Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine's Beats Electronics for a staggering $3.2 billion. The deal, which would mark Apple's largest acquisition to date, includes both the headphones and Pill speakers which have become ubiquitous in music videos and on the subways and streets, as well as Beats' recently launched music streaming service. Assuming discussions remain on track, source believe that the sale could be announced as soon as next week.
