The African-born, Edinburgh-based trio transform the clubby original into something eerie.

FADER PREMIERE

Trip-hop guru Tricky is getting ready to drop Adrian Thaws, the follow-up to last year's False Idols. The record gets its title from Tricky's birth name and contains, according to a press release, "what [he] would consider club music." While the original version of album cut "Nicotine Love" features the gentle voice of his frequent collaborator Francesca Belmonte and a softly-throbbing backbeat, this "StraightFace" edit by Edinburgh trio Young Fathers is borderline unrecognizable. The African-born artists add their own verses, peeling back the original's clubby, middle-of-the-night romance into a skeletal, hollowed-out R&B song that uses empty spaces and whispers to construct a very specific, very spooky ambience. Adrian Thaws is out on September 8th; download the remix for free right here.
