Lupe Fiasco Subverts Trap Tropes on “Next To It”

Lupe’s latest video bumps with the same bounce it aims to skewer.

Lupe Fiasco loves to embrace the political stage his fame allows him. "Next To It" might feature rap's favorite ratchet R&B hook man, Ty Dolla $ign, but Lupe is more concerned with mocking what he sees as the materialistic one-upmanship of rap culture and the unfortunate need to sell sex to promote one's music. He takes to the video in an all black leather outfit, looking like a toned down Migos and displays each metaphor by having a auction audience skipping on bidding on an objects--anything looks good with a titty next to it. Ironically, the off-kilter production and Ty$'s hook sell this song, but satirizing the man paid to be on the chorus hits a bit close to home.
