Listen To “Deepend,” a Song from Bedroom Producer Mister Lies’ New LP

Hear an early, emotional cut from his forthcoming Orchid Tapes full-length.

August 28, 2014

It makes sense that Nick Zanca aka Mister Lies is releasing his sophomore full-length, Shadow, on Brooklyn label Orchid Tapes, the Internet's favorite purveyor of unselfconsciously emotional bedroom pop. Put up against the fidgety, sample-centric beat work that's dominated his output thus far, first single "Deepend" feels hyper-personal and songwriter-y, in big part due to the sensitive singing that's coming from Zanca himself. The repeated refrain towards the end that starts Don't pull me up/ I will drown happily feels fated to be shouted in unison by a room full of young people, probably bummed-out about something but collectively happy in that moment. The production is expectedly transportive, sounding busy and rattling in some places but spare and out-of-focus in others. Shadow is out October 28th and features contributions from New York singer Harrison Lipton and Mister Lies' Portland-based labelmate, Arrange. You can pre-order the record today.
