Father’s “2 Dead, 6 Wounded” Is Pretty Awful

Stream a new cut from Atlanta’s Father, fresh off the release of his mixtape “Young Hot Ebony.”

Oh, you thought you were gonna walk up to me in this party and pull out your ass to kiss? Ayo, somebody pass Bacardi, I need to concentrate on this last decision, Father half-raps in a nasal drawl, and before we know it, a Father's Day party is showered in gunfire and there's at least two babies dead. If there's any aesthetic tying together Atlanta's 11-person Awful Records crew, which includes Father, Lightning Man, Archibald Slim and Rich Po Slim (maybe relation?), alongside collaborator iLoveMakonnen, it's their ability to rap about truly awful things—alcoholism, lynchings, sexual depravity, dead babies—in a style so quirky you almost forget how terrible it sounds when you rap along out loud. Father dropped his new tape Young Hot Ebony yesterday, and "2 Dead, 6 Wounded" is one of the hottest bullets in the clip: all distorted percussion, smirking gangsterism, and black humor. Stream the whole album here, including heatrock "Look at Wrist," and check back for our convo with Father later this week.
