FADER Mix: Scratcha DVA

The London producer whips up a Hyperdub-heavy mix to celebrate the label’s North American tour that kicks off tonight.

September 09, 2014

Recent GEN F star Inga Copeland provides a personalized introduction in her native tongue to fellow Hyperdub artist Scratcha DVA's formidable FADER Mix. With poise and class, the London producer ducks and dives through a swiftly mutating landscape of club-shaped sounds, spinning a Hyperdub-heavy playlist that includes tracks from Ikonika, Cooly G, The Bug, label boss Kode9 and the late, great DJ Rashad. If you had any doubt that the Hyperdub label—who celebrate their 10th year with a US tour that kicks off tonight (full dates below)—is anything less than the don at stretching the dancefloor in new directions, this mix should set you straight. Embrace it below, and scroll down to find out what's been itching Scratcha's mind lately.

Where are you right now? Describe your surroundings. I am literally sitting on sum massive stone thing not far from Brixton train station outside the Ritzy. It's nice weather so I thought I'd sit here and reply instead of going somewhere and getting sidetracked and never doing it. Surroundings are nice. People walking holding hands. I see people come here and chill and work on laptops so I thought I'd give it a try.

What kind of vibe were you going for on this mix and what's on it? Went for a str8 ravey vybe on this mix but still slipping in some sultry vybes from the likes of Cooly G and Jessy Lanza here and dere. New bits from myself as always, and I think it's the 1st mix I've done where I've changed tempo from 134-160 in 45 mins.

What's your favorite record from Hyperdub's 10-year-old back catalogue and why? Archangel by Burial. I can't explain y. U just need 2 listen 2it I guess then you'll understand.

Prediction hat on: what kind of music will Hyperdub be putting out in another 10 years' time? Music you didn't know u wanted or needed 2 listen 2.

When can we expect a new DVA record and what are you cooking up? U can expect a new record next yr. Am just happy 2b werkin and creating sounds again. I've been DJ'in a lot and it's been fun.

What's the last book you read that had a big impact on you? Probably Roger Red Hat. I have been meaning 2 read a new book. Coz I haven't since. I wanna try read Art Of War or the Blacks Law Dictionary. Sumfing which has actual relevance 2livin life. I can't read sum fictional stuff, I'd rather just go cinema.

What's your favorite dish to cook and how do you make it? Chicken, rice and peas with maybe a side of avocado and/or macaroni cheese and jerk sauce. I am a confident badboy at cooking and i challenge anyone to a duel.
