Maybe it has come to this. The concept of "White Privilege"--the cloak of invisibility that renders White Americans as the default benefactors to the country's freedoms and perks, and leaves everyone else to scrap for seconds--has been debated heatedly throughout a year that's seen countless racial incidents bubble up into nationwide talking points. In his latest video, Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins and Supa BWE stretches the metaphor to its conceptual limit, physically robbing his White peers for catch-free loans and undisturbed walks down the street. Come off them benefits... fuck your little check, all I want's your respect, he raps, at once evoking Ralph Ellison's subtlety Dave Chappelle's crudeness. It's a protest song that shouldn't have to be recorded in our time, which may speak to just how essential it actually is. Supa BWE's Hurt Everybody EP is available now.
