Melbourne’s Twerps Announce Merge Records Debut, Share “Back To You” Video

Hear and watch the breezy new single from the Australian quartet.

Early next year, Melbourne-based janglers Twerps will release Range Anxiety, the band's second-ever full-length and first since signing to Merge. Breezy album cut "Back to You," which will exist as its own 7-inch come November 4th, recalls the steady, sunny momentum of obvious guitar-pop forebearers like The Chills and The Feelies. Despite being about self-loathing, jealousy, and a potentially damaging relationship, the track is bittersweet; the classic-feeling chorus and whimsical melodic flourishes project a specific sort of optimism, like, life's shit now—but maybe it won't always be such a bummer. The Johann Rashid-directed official video, embedded above, features shots of the band's members, isolated and contemplative, across various Melbourne settings. "To quote Neneh Cherry, 'somedays are better than somedays,'" says singer and guitarist Martin Frawley over e-mail. "This song and video show us one of those days." The first 100 people who pre-order Range Anxiety (out January 23rd in Australia via Chapter Music and Jan 27th stateside via Merge) get a "Back to You" 7-inch; Twerps' early 2K15 tour schedule, which includes a few dates in support of pop storytellers Belle and Sebastian, is down below, too.
