Lorde Covers Jeremih, Dick-Shames Diplo

Killing covers, slinging jokes, at the same damn time

November 13, 2014

Everything's coming up Lorde today—perhaps not coincidentally, less than a week before the Lorde-curated The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 soundtrack drops. Stereogum points to video of Lorde covering Jeremih and YG's "Don't Tell 'Em" for BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge, and her take leans pretty hard on the tune's "Rhythm Is A Dancer" interpolation (not a bad thing!). The cover was strong enough to inspire Annie Mac to effuse, "You could do hip-hop!" to which Lorde replies with a giggle, "I'm fine where I am." Lorde! You're so modest.

On a less-modest tip (pardon the pun), Lorde issued a withering burn to Diplo on Twitter last night in response to his probably-in-jest, fairly tasteless, very Diplo-esque "Get Taylor Swift A Booty" campaign. "Should we do something about your tiny penis hm," Lorde replied, which is a pretty good comeback! Now, keep in mind, Diplo's Major Lazer project is featured on the Mockingjay OST, he recently remixed her Pure Heroine single "Tennis Court," and a recent Billboard profile revealed that the two have been collaborating in some capacity—so, this could all be some good-natured ribbing, who knows. Regardless, points to Lorde, she's got jokes.
