Martyn Shares Story Behind His 2009 Collaboration With The Late Spaceape

Revisit “Is This Insanity” and find out the backstory of the song’s meaning.

January 16, 2015

Late last year, UK MC Spaceape passed away after a five-year battle with cancer. Among other things, he left behind a legacy of memorable collaborations with the bass music community, including this track from Dutch producer Martyn's 2009 debut Great Lengths, "Is This Insanity?". Martyn's reissuing the single as part of a new EP on February 16 via his 3024 label, which'll come with the cracking Ben Klock remix from 2010 and a new cut, "Camberwell Green." Martyn's shared a statement about the track with FADER, too:

"'Is This Insanity?' was the first collaboration with the inimitable vocalist and great friend Stephen Gordon a.k.a. The Spaceape – who sadly passed away on October 2nd 2014. The song was written shortly after Stephen's daughter was born and deals with the rollercoaster of emotions one goes through taking care of a new life. You carry on because there's a responsibility, but at the same time you ask yourself whether this is insanity?"
