Skrillex and Diplo, who work together as Jack Ü, recently sat down for an interview with Charlie Rose. The two producers explained the modern musical world to their host. "Now it's D.I.Y.," Diplo noted. "I can literally go on my laptop, make a song, put it on Youtube or SoundCloud, and reach somebody in a couple hours. And that record could be catapulted onto radio. The distribution chain is lost. The labels still do the same thing like creating bands and A&R-ing records, but we are in a different world where do it very grass roots." Skrillex pointed out the democratic impacts of wide access to technology, which gives "normal people an outlet to be creative."
Diplo also stated his mission as a musician. "Our job as producers is inside the computer: to make the most, the loudest, the craziest, the next, the biggest, something that you haven't heard before. Our goal is always to make something new, something fresh." Lately he's been doing exactly that: check out his recent smash with Justin Bieber, "Where Are Ü Now," below.
