Big Freedia And Hibou Link On Lush New Version Of “Excuse”

Bounce and dream pop merge on this airy remix.

October 20, 2015

New Orleans bounce pioneer Big Freedia has collaborated with Seattle dream-pop band Hibou on a new version of Freedia’s "Excuse,” from her 2011 EP, Scion A/V Presents: Big Freedia. Hibou’s addition to the track gives “Excuse” a second life. It takes the heavy, bass-oriented original and makes it softer and brighter, with lush synth and airy vocals while maintaining that signature bounce sound. As Big Freedia and Hibou embark on their joint U.S. tour, "Excuse" gives us a sneak preview of how these two completely different sounds come together—and we're sold.

“The anticipation of touring with Big Freedia is intense, I honestly have no idea what to expect,” said Peter Michel of Hibou in an email to the FADER. “Will we be booed off stage? Maybe! Will I become immersed in the bounce scene of New Orleans? Who knows! To cater to my anxiety, I remixed one of the queen diva’s songs to tie our sounds together, and it was easier than I thought it would be.” See the tour dates below.
