Prince's impact on music is incalculable, but it's safe to say that he gave license to charismatic freaks like Mac DeMarco to show their true colors. Mac's aware of this, judging from a couple of Prince tributes he shared on Instagram. He says in one of them “We lost a true hero of mine the other day. Although it's sad, I'm sure he's ripping a hot solo right now in the next dimension.”
He's followed those up with a very pretty cover of Prince's “It's Gonna Be Lonely,” from the recently departed legend's second album. A video of the performance with bandmate Jon Lent was filmed and directed by Jim Larson for Pitchfork.tv in New York's Rockaway Beach, where Mac lives. It's the second music video he's made in two weeks that features a fetish mask, which must be some kind of record.
