M.I.A. Says She Has Pulled Out Of Headlining Afropunk

The festival is due to take place in London in September.

Last week's announcement that M.I.A. would headline London's first Afropunk Festival the news proved controversial. Many music fans pointed to comments regarding the Black Lives Matter movement in April by the artist as to why she was wrong for the line-up.

M.I.A. responded to this feedback via Twitter on June 19 then again last night, Jun 20. Last night that she claimed she would no longer headline the festival, saying, "I've been told to stay in my lane." The FADER has reached out to representatives for both M.I.A. and Afropunk for clarification and comment.

Afropunk is due to take place on September 24 at London's Alexandra Palace. See M.I.A.'s tweets below.
