Lao Ra’s New Video Captures The True Magic Of Colombian Carnival

“Bang Boom” transports you to the streets of Barranquilla.

Lao Ra is a new pop voice to get excited about. The London-based singer has some of the attitude of M.I.A. combined with the PC Music-polished glitz of Charli XCX, but both are firmly grounded in the influence of her own Colombian heritage. As she explains in a press release for "Bang Boom," her new single: "I'd been trying to hide my Colombianness...I was inspired by bands who weren’t Colombian, so I was trying to do what they did — I didn’t realize I could mix it."

"Bang Boom" is a rallying cry of a pop song, and its carnivalesque video premieres today on The FADER. "The video is magic realism," Lao Ra told The FADER over email. "That is what the Barranquilla's carnival celebrates, and that is what the video wanted to capture. Wild animals, magical characters with a spirit stronger than a bamboo tree." Watch it above.
