Speaking on Radio 1, Matty Healy of the band said their synth-filled take on the original was inspired by listening to the modern artists Sade has inspired. "If you listen to Kanye, if you listen to Bon Iver, if you listen to the Francis and the Lights moments on that Chance record, "By Your Side" has so much of that identity. I was listening to it with this real sense of modernity and thinking 'wow, this is still really forward-thinking.'"
