Farai’s Colorful Post-Punk Is What You Need To Get Through Today

Her new EP Kisswell is due soon on NON Worldwide.

Farai is a Zimbabwean-British artist whose tracks, released via NON Worldwide, are a kind of scrappy electronic post-punk. Together with producer TØNE, she creates a sound that's vivid and sparse, as if it was painted in thick brush strokes of primary colors. In her January video for the song "Lion Warrior," she belted repeated mantras like "I'm a warrior" and "I roll with the Hell's Angels," all while sitting stoically in the midst of chaos.

In her latest, "Inhale Exhale," the lyrics again form a kind of repetitive guided meditation, lulling the listener into a trance, while the video bursts in red, yellow, and green. In a statement emailed to The FADER, Farai explained that she "tried to showcase what it means to chase the dragon in the streets. London — only for the insiders — the hustle. Camouflage was a reference to strength; the ritual fire colors a way of life."

Farai's debut EP Kisswell will be released on NON Worldwide this month. Londoners can see her live on March 17 at The Yard; Berlin fans can see her support Princess Nokia on April 18.
