TYGAPAW's music and art collective Fake Accent has been carving out a space for QTPOC in the underground club scene for three years. That's something that warrants celebration: in addition to an anniversary party this Saturday, April 8 at Knockdown Center in Masbeth, Queens, the collective is premiering Fake Accent: Yin Yang Vol. 1. The 10-track compilation is infectious and unconventional, marrying the members' individual styles without sounding disconnected.
"This month marks the three-year anniversary of the birth of Fake Accent," Tygapaw told The FADER over email. "It's incredible to acknowledge the fact that I've been active in the underground club world for three years now, which is no small feat when there is absolutely no money, very limited resources if any at all, and venues that actively reject QTPOC-centered parties if you do not have adequate visibility. Not to mention the toxic environment that exists due to limited resources and lack of lucrative opportunities for qtpoc."
"For Fake Accent to continuously defy the odds," she continued, "I felt it necessary to give back to the people who have supported us from day one. This compilation is a thank you to all who have stood with us, attended a Fake Accent party and for all the true Fake Accent supporters."
