In the early hours of Friday morning the Senate voted to reject a new, scaled-down Republican repeal of parts of the Affordable Care Act. It's a huge blow to Trump, who has already tweeted about his unhappiness with the decision.

Senator John McCain cast the decisive vote alongside two fellow Republicans, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, who also voted against repealing Obamacare 51-49. McCain, who returned to the Senate after being diagnosed with brain cancer this week, cast his vote at 1:30 a.m. on Friday morning.

Despite the lateness of the vote, crowds had gathered outside the Capitol Building in Washington to hear the final verdict.
