Nilüfer Yanya’s “Baby Luv” video captures all the faded glamor of the British seaside

“Do you like pain?”

Nilüfer Yanya's latest single "Baby Luv" is sparse and arresting: over the impassioned thrum of a solo guitar, she repeats the pointed hook, "Do you like pain?" The 22-year-old London-based singer-songwriter has a knack for writing lyrics that seem to stare you straight in the eye, and her videos have a similar disquieting edge. Shot in the coastal county of Cornwall and directed by Nilüfer's older sister Molly and her boyfriend, "Baby Luv" shows Nilüfer performing in her effortless, deadpan style among the soft glittering of arcade games, grey ocean fronts, and fish and chip shops.

"Baby Luv was written around this time last year," Nilüfer explained in an email. "The title came from an image of a pram. We were going for a Martin Parr-esque style so we shot the video in Penzance, Cornwall. It was probably the most immersed I’ve been in a shooting a video because we were on location for three or four days. I look very cold in a lot of it, because I was. At one point we nearly lost all our equipment to the sea." Watch the results above.
