The movie was written by LaBeouf under the pseudonym Otis Lort and is set during the actor's childhood. An actor since his youth, Honey Boy captures LaBeouf during his time making the Disney Channel’s Even Stevens as a teenager.

Honey Boy is reportedly about LaBeouf's relationship with his father, a former clown performer and recovering heroin addict. "Honey boy" was the nickname given to him by his father.

Hedges received an Oscar nomination for his role in 2016 movie Manchester By The Sea and also appeared in both Lady Bird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Last year LaBeouf played tennis player John McEnroe in Borg McEnroe.

LaBeouf recently spoke about the time he spent with Kanye West and how the rapper "took all my fucking clothes."
