This is not the first time Rihanna has expressed herself politically –– she has a well-documented history of using her platform to give space for issues and people she cares about. She recently attended the Global Partnership for Education Conference, an organization for which she is an ambassador for. She also has spoken out against gun violence following the death of her cousin in 2017.

Mottely is a member of the Barbados Labour Party, and in her acceptance speech, she spoke to the work that lied ahead of her in her new role. “There should be no time for gloating. We are all one people. We are Barbadians. We will need many hands to help make light work. We will rebuild Barbados together,” Mottley said, according to a report from TeleSUR. “We have to get to the task immediately."
