Before he signed to Godmode, the label that's home to Yaeji and Shamir among others, Channel Tres lent his songwriting and production skills to artists such as Kehlani and Duckwrth. But with April's "Controller" video, he stepped out with a singular sound, one that's equally as indebted to warehouses of Detroit as it to the streets of his native Compton.

In his new video for "Jet Black," Tres turns everyday locations, like the barbershop (the video features his actual barber) and the supermarket, into the club. The song itself is uptempo and celebratory; it sounds like it could've easily served as the hypnotizing theme song for Marvel's Luke Cage.

"'Jet Black" is the blackest black. My modern-day black superhero," Channel Tres told The FADER over email. "Aware and connected to the source. Stone to the bone, no need for substances. Self-empowerment that make your ass move.” The track will appear on Channel Tres's debut EP, due out July 27 on Godmode. Watch the video for "Jet Black" above.
