Jack Irving makes inflatable clothes that feel straight out of a fever dream

Part clothing, part sculpture.

Before Lady Gaga put on her Joanne hat and was routinely stepping out in avant-garde wear, she was a big fan of Jack Irving. The British designer was still a student at the prestigious London art institution Central Saint Martins when Gaga wore his design: a metallic sea urchin get-up with dozens of inflatable, spiky iridescent tentacles.

Irving never stopped creating maximalist clothing, and his use of the inflatable has only gotten more alien. Part clothing, part sculpture, Irving's designs give off an otherworldly energy, his silhouettes often mimicking the fantastical structure of microbes as seen beneath a microscope or the eeriness of a deep-sea creature. Peep below to see more of Irving's designs and follow him on Instagram to see more of his work.
