The Eagles's Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) has officially been certified as the best-selling album in U.S. chart history. The record previously belonged to Michael Jackson's Thriller, the 1982 album which features the singles "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" among others.

Recording Industry Association of America confirmed to the Associated Press on Monday that the band’s 1976 compilation album has been certified 38x platinum, meaning it has sold 38 million copies. It's the first time the album has been re-evaluated since 2006. Thriller's numbers were updated last year with the album certified 33x platinum.

Testament to The Eagles's popularity is the fact that their 1977 album Hotel Calfornia is the third best-selling album with 26 million copies sold.
