Beck says he’s not a Scientologist

After years of being associated with the organization, Beck has distanced himself from the Church of Scientology, according to The Hollywood Reporter. While he has embraced the church in the past, it seems he's changed his mind following his divorce from second-generation Scientologist Marissa Ribisi.

“I think there’s a misconception that I am a Scientologist. I’m not a Scientologist. I don’t have any connection or affiliation with it," Beck recently told the Sydney Morning Herald. "But I’ve pretty much just focused on my music and my work for most of my life, and tended to do my own thing...I think it’s just something people ran with.” Beck went on to explain that these misconceptions may have also stemmed from the fact that his father, composer David Campbell, is a Scientologist.

While it's not entirely clear if Beck is implying he was previously a member and no longer is or that he never was, the comments seem at odds with his previous endorsement of the church, having told MTV that criticisms of Scientology were a "kind of intolerance" he found "insidious" back in 2003. In 2005, he explicitly referred to himself as a member in an Irish Sunday Tribune Interview. "Yeah, I'm a Scientologist. My father has been a Scientologist for about 35 years, so I grew up in and around it and stuff," he said.
