Pink Siifu’s “pull up” is a nostalgic mic drop

Pink Siifu gets personal in the music video premiering exclusively on The FADER for “pull up,” the jazz rap track off his 2018 EP I’m still. Like the chill beat of the song, the video documents the pedestrian beauty of everyday activities, stringing vignettes together of riding around the city with friends and a father braiding his son's hair. It’s these simple activities that are elevated when soundtracked by pink siifu’s laid-back flow and honest lyrics. “Had to tell pops I cry too, it’s cool / I miss grandma too” confesses the Los Angeles-based rapper over the understated loop, which mixes classic jazz piano chords with muted percussion. Contextualizing the personal lyrics with the history of his LA-basis and the civil rights movement, he samples a 1968 speech given at the Free Huey Rally in Oakland, CA, by the pioneer of the Black Power movement, Stokely Carmichael. Before the dragged out delay of the hook reverberates Pink Siifu’s plea to “pull up“ though, he lays a nostalgic mic drop: “Black hands, stay safe. Vigilant / Old pictures got me looking at shit different / Been a minute we don’t ever speak / I’m mad at making time for somebody who don’t make time for me.”
