Devonté Hynes shares “Passing” from new film soundtrack

Hynes scored the new Netflix feature Passing and will digitally release its soundtrack Saturday.

Devonté Hynes has shared the opener and title track from his upcoming digital album, Passing (Music From and Inspired by the Original Motion Picture), out Saturday, November 10. Hynes scored Passing, a new Netflix feature based on a 1929 Nella Larson novella and directed by Rebecca Hall. The film follows a Black woman in New York during the Harlem Renaissance who finds out her childhood friend has been passing as white.

Hynes has scored three films since releasing 2019's Angel Pulse, his fifth full-length project as Blood Orange. Aside from Passing, he wrote the music for Queen & Slim (2019) and this year's Mainstream. He also scored the first season of Luca Guadagnino’s HBO series We Are Who We Are, soundtracked the new season of In Treatment, co-scored a Naomi Osaka docuseries, and contributed music to Ryuichi Sakamoto's Beckett soundtrack.

"Passing" is a quick but contemplative overture, a "Taps"-like trumpet duet complemented by quiet, tasteful keys. Listen below:
