Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles” is almost old enough to drink legally in the United States. The iconically melodramatic piano ballad turned 20 in February, reminding those of us who grew up with it as a birthday party and Bar Mitzvah standard how old we all are now.
Beatrice Kristi Laus, the Filipino-British singer-songwriter who released her sophomore album as beabadoobee back in July, was only 20 months old when “A Thousand Miles” entered the canon, which is perhaps why she was able to reimagine it so thoroughly for her performance at BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge on Wednesday (October 5). Her full-band cover of the track leaves the angst of the original intact while roughening its edges a bit with a grungy guitar riff and a less airbrushed vocal line.
