Jesus Piece's "An Offering To The Night" glistens with the violence that flashes off vocalist Aaron Head's pen. His delivery on the track, the Pennsylvania band's first new material since 2018 debut Only Self, is half bark and half roar but the lyrics are entirely human. Whether it's mention of skin scraping the pavement or Head's desire for his "pound of flesh," the bodily nature of the track feels as close as warm breath on the nape of your neck.

That physicality is matched by guitarists David Updike and John DiStefano whose riffs swing and pummel in equal measure, never quite settling on a groove long enough to let comfort set in. Across the board on "An Offering to the Night" Jesus Piece sound muscular, unforgiving, and ready to rumble as if they have spent the past four years psyching themselves up in the mirror for this exact moment. That taught energy is always welcome but it's their merciless approach and steely determination that really makes this brutal re-introduction stand out.
