Press materials note that Space Heavy was written between 2020 and 2022 while Marshall was traveling between London and Liverpool, where he was splitting his time.

The new album follows previous King Krule projects Man Alive! (2020), The Ooz (2017), and 2013 debut 6 Feet Beneath the Moon. Live album You Heat Me Up, You Cool Me Down was released in 2021 while 2015's A New Place 2 Drown, came out under Marshall's real name. Earlier this year Marshall shared the debut EP by Aqrxvst, a new trio he formed alongside Pretty V and Jadasea.
